Do you remember my previous article from earlier this year about the new ".mobi" Top Level Domain:
Leading companies from the mobile industry have signed a memorandum of understanding to apply for a mobile Top Level Domain (&"mobile TLD") from the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) during the current application round, which closes March 15. If the application is successful and the mobile TLD is granted by ICANN, the industry leaders have agreed to form a new joint venture to manage the mobile TLD. A mobile TLD would be a key step in bridging the world of mobility and the Internet to the benefit of customers and the entire mobile industry.
A mobile TLD on the Internet creates the opportunity to streamline the deployment of new Internet sites optimized for mobile usage. This effort is driven by the aim of simplifying the Internet experience for mobile subscribers and increasing the ease of use and speed of delivery of mobile Internet services.
Now the ICANN approved this sponsored Top Level Domain (sTDL) for mobile devices! 8O
The ".mobi" domain, according to a consortium headed by Nokia, Vodafone and Microsoft, will create "the opportunity to streamline the deployment of new Internet sites optimized for mobile usage." However, it's hard to see how a new domain will do anything other than add to the confusion created by the proliferation of other "specialized" (read: useless) domains such as .info, .name and .biz."
I'm still not a big fan of such a sTLD and would prefer a standardized sub-domain scheme: instead of "www.ppcw.mobi" I still suggest something like "mobil.ppcw.net" which saves me money and is - in my humble opinion - more useful. But who asks the webmasters? ;-)
