The Smartphone is like no other mobile phone available today and therefore O2 Asia Pacific is ready to launch an Windows Powered 2002 Smartphone at least in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Australia:

The Microsoft Windows Powered Smartphone is above all a great mobile phone. You can expect to find all the basic and advanced phone functions on a Smartphone, but what makes it the smartest phone available on the market today is the Windows Powered software that lets you e-mail, instant message, surf the Web, listen to music, play games, and much, much more.

Use attached camera to shoot new photos, and video clips with accompanying audio, then view them immediately or E-mail them to your friends.

Many photo templates/frames are provided to add more fun to picture taking! You can put your captured photos into these digital frames, and E-mail them as attachments to friends. In addition, you can capture a number of consecutive images with one click.

The built-in MMS Client enables you to send and receive Multimedia Messages and to join the new MMS world.

MMS is like SMS - but no longer limited to text messages with 160 characters. An MMS messages combines text, images and sounds to a new world of mobile messaging. Take a photo with your camera, record any comment, combine this to one message and send it directly to your friend with an MMS phone or to any email address.

mmO2 doesn't confirmed any plans so far, to release a Windows Powered Smartphone in Europe soon. However - you can win a O2 Smartphone by joining a survey on O2 Asia Pacific's Smartphone site.

Update: I just got confirmed that it wont be a HTC Tanager but was asked not to speak about which device it will be finally. Also I can't talk about an expected release date.

Cheers ~ Arne

In the area I live in, GSM coverage is very poor. I have overcome the problem by purchasing a Siemens S46, Dual Band(GSM/TDMA) phone. Does the Microsoft Smartphone offer Dual Band Coverage ?

Thanks in advance

@Sam: You mean dual mode (GSM/TDMA) while dual band is the same technology with different frequencies like GSM Dual Band (900/1800 MHz or 900/1900 MHz) or GSM Triple Band (900/1800/1900 MHz).

But back to your question, no - this phone will not support Dual Mode for several reasons:

- 1st because I know which device it will be

- 2nd because TDMA is so outdated

- 3rd O2 is a pure GSM/W-CDMA (3G/UMTS) carrier and doesn't operate any TDMA networks.

- 4th it's not released in the US but in Asia

You are looking for a GAIT handset.  I currently use the Nokia 6340i (which is also GAIT).

TDMA is dead and both AT&T and Cingular are working to offer GSM wherever there is TDMA coverage.  They just got IL done (where I'm at).  Where are you and I can give you more details as they pertain to you...

Thanks to both Arne, and McHale for your responses. I live in Las Vegas NV,USA. I guess I should have stated that I use GSM whenever possible, however at my house GSM is almost unusable, while TDMA gives me a strong signal. AT&T tells me that they are planning to put up 24 more GSM towers in Las Vegas in the next year or so. Untill then I switch my Siemens S46 to TDMA while at home so as to not miss any calls. Again, thanks for your replys !
