UNVEILED: Asus to release a new Windows Mobile Smartphone with HSDPA and GPS [UPDATE]

It looks like a Asus P-series smartphone but according to the information we've just received, this is a brand new Asus A-series smartphone sporting Windows Mobile 6 Professional, a Marvell 520 MHz PXA27x CPU, 256 MB ROM and 128 MB RAM.
Uncommon for Asus A-series devices are the WWAN functionality since A-series devices are normally PNA (Personal Navigation Assistant). But the information we've just received mentions, that this device features GSM/GPRS/EDGE and HSDPA at 3.6 Mbps as well as WiFi and Bluetooth!

And yes, since it's a A-series (PNA) device it's also featuring GPS with SiRF III and an FM radio (most likely used for TMC). Last but not least, the "Asus Axxx" is expected to feature a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera.

If the device above becomes true - with the mentioned specs - this seems to become an interesting device. Especially because the UMTS/HSDPA and GPS combination is still rare.
Further information like price or release date are completely unknown so

UPDATE: Okay, I was completely wrong with the theory that the device above is an Asus A-series device. I've just received the confirmation that it will be indeed a P-series device plus GPS SiRF III capabilities. Again thanks to "cinia_tungtung" for the follow-up! Also I got the word from two sources now, that the above mentioned specs are definitely confirmed and that the device, as we see it above, exists already. Therefore we can say it's not a rumor anymore but kind of confirmed.

Cheers ~ Arne

Seems like a very nice device indeed. Probably the successor to Asus P525/P526. Any informations regarding dimensions, weight, screen size or possible release date?

There should be a slew of Windows Mobile-based devices released within the next couple of months (August, September, and October) from Samsung, LG, HTC, and i-mate. Would be good to see Asus release something like this, too.

As always, keep us updated ;-)

This will call asus p750
release date before october ...
Screen size : 2.6 inch

Thanks for the information!

I guess the design will be something along the design of Asus P526. Hope they can keep the relative slim profile from P526, too. Roll on September/October! :-D

If its a 2.6 inch screen then the device is about 5 cm wide and 10 cm tall.

Nice. So not a Smartphone but a Pocket PC Phone with (just) a numeric keypad. Sounds good since I like my device slim and that mostly isn't the case when a full qwerty keyboard is added. Thanks for the info, I hope more information will come available soon.

With introduction of Windows Mobile 6, the term Pocket PC Phone (Edition) is gone and all Windows Mobile devices with WWAN are called smartphone (which Palm did already with their Windows Mobile devices). Therefore we are also slowly shifting the wording to that.

The identification if it is a former Pocket PC or Smartphone is:

Windows Mobile 6 Professional = formerly known as Pocket PC Phone Edition (aka touch screen)
Windows Mobile 6 Standard = formerly known as Smartphone (aka non-touch screen)

Just come to think about, will it have the 'flush' touch screen that we know from iPhone, HTC Touch, and Sony Ericsson W960? It should make it easier to use with your fingers instead of the stylus. Unfortunately it doesn't look that way from the picture, but it's hard to tell.

Any idea what the screen resolution would be?  Would love for this baby to be VGA!

Posted by Arne Hess on 26.07.07 - 09:46:07

I would bet on QVGA. Don't think VGA is an option yet. Hopefully it's not 240 x 240 only but the screen looks higher then wide so a 4:3 resolution seems most reasonable.

I'm based in the UK, and we're still waiting for the P526.

So if someone could post exactly when, and more importantly WHERE this will be released (around Sept/Oct)  I'm prepared to fly out and get me one. Cos UK releases are far too delayed.

Going to be some real competition with the HTC Nike - but Asus wins on style, and probably build quality if it's a metal case.

Really REALLY excited to see they've added what look slike a 5-way navigation type button, below the centre of the screen, which I felt was missing in the P526.
Would be great if this was a ball like on Blackberry devices.

Bring it on, Asus.

That's pretty much the problem with Asus press releases. I've stopped paying any attention to them because they always take months to get to market, and the good ones never make it over to the EU (or by the time they do, they're seriously outdated).
