Later this week, Samsung will unveil its definition of a smartwatch, the Samsung Galaxy Gear, but Venture Beat got its hands on a couple of screenshots, which were taken from an internal promotional marketing video, as well as on a prototype, which was sent to developers and partners and therefore we should keep in mind that highly security conscious Samsung might have not sent out the final design but rather a prototype design which hides the final look and feel. Nevertheless, what we see here shouldn't be too different from what Samsung will unveil on Wednesday. The Galaxy Gear is said to be roughly sized 3". The roughly 2.5" sized screen is square but has large bezels on the top and bottom.

The wristband holds speakers in the clasp as well as a 4 megapixel camera which is built into the strap. The smartwatch prototype in question had Bluetooth to connect with the Galaxy S family of smartphones and tablets, it's yet unclear if the Galaxy Gear will also play nice with other brands, as well as WiFi for independent Internet access.

Other features include Samsung S Voice for voice commands, preloaded Android apps for social media, health tracking, etc., integration with a companion Galaxy S phone or tablet, an - as said - easy-to-use swipe function to access apps, the built-in camera, and the photo gallery, call logs, Internet access, social media integration, a a power button on the side and it's said that Samsung Gear will have 10+ hours battery life.

While the smartwatch above looks neither good nor appealing, my biggest concern are the 10+ hours battery life. What does 10+ men? 10:30, 11 or 12 hours? For just a watch, even if it's a connected, without a WWAN interface it's - IMHO - definitely not enough. It's even less than my average working day so how could such a watch support my everyday life? Anyway, so far it's all speculation and we should get the final information on Wednesday.

Cheers ~ Arne
