T-Mobile Germany today unveiled the T-Mobile MDA Ameo 16 GB, the follower of the earlier released MDA Ameo, T-Mobile's version of the HTC Athena.
While the device design stays the same - more or less (except some keyboard rearrangements as T-Mobile Germany said in its press release) - the Ameo 16 GB gets a doubled hard disk drive, featuring 16 GB, compared to the original MDA Ameo/HTC Athena and T-Mobile Germany accidentally confirmed that the new Ameo will run with Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional:

T-Mobile Germany plans to release the MDA Ameo 16 GB in April 2008; with a 24 months contract it will be available from 459,95 Euro. It's not yet announced if other T-Mobile subsidiaries will also carry the new 16 GB version.

Cheers ~ Arne

I would instead like them to go in for 16GB flash version with no magnets+inclusion of microphone

How did T-Mobile "accidentally confirm" Windows Mobile 6.1? I can't find that in the press release or anywhere else... Thanks. smile

T-Mobile speaks in its press release about "das Betriebssystem Office Mobile 6.1" which translates to "the operating system Office Mobile 6.1". Well, Office Mobile isn't a operating system, not to my knowledge!
So what does T-Mobile mean? The operating system 6.1 or the Office Mobile (version) 6.1? My guess is they mean both but we will see.

will you be reviewing this updated 16GB Ameo?  I am considering purchasing the slightly older version (8GB) off of Ebay, pending 1 considerable factor for me:

Would the Athena be able to surf the web over a USB, EVDO Rev A (carrier: Verizon) type of modem?

It's inbuilt 3G would be of some use where I live (Phoenix, AZ, US) via the AT&T/Cingular network, but it doesn't penetrate much indoors here.  Therefore I would prefer the EvDO.

I'm not sure the Ameo or Athena could handle this connection, either from a software compatibility standpoint, or even a hardware standpoint (low-powered USB port?).

Thanks for your extremely helpful expertise, Arne!

No, I haven't planned a review yet since, hardware-wise - the Ameo 16 GB has minor changes only.
The USB modem topic is an interesting question but I have serious doubts it will working. While the Ameo features USB host, AFAIK it's supporting memory drives only. Also I don't think that there are required drivers and the dial-up software available for Windows Mobile. While I have 0 experiences with this combination, I don't see any serious chances to get a EV-DO USB modem working with the Ameo/Athena.

Arne, thanks for the response!  If it's true that it won't an EVDO usb modem, I may just have to get an OQO Model 02, which has far worse battery life and costs a bunch more.  Anyway, thank you for your thoughts and help!  ~John
