While it looks like the long awaited Android 2.0.1 OTA update for the Motorola Milestone is finally hitting Germany, after it was already announced for France and Italy, it seems that currently only O2 Germany customers will get it over the air. It's reported that Vodafone Germany or open market Milestone users still get a message that the device is either up-to-date or not able to communicate with Motorola's update server. Nevertheless, following the availability of the Android 2.0.1/Eclair update for French and Italian customers, German customers can now also download the update from Motorola's support site to update the Motorola Milestone from a PC.

All it needs is the Motorola Software Update utility which which is available from Motorola's support website. In our test the update worked with an open market Milestone and the download and update took roughly 20 minutes. The Android 2.0.1 update is an incremental update which means that only parts of the firmware are updated and no data should be lost.

First of all the Motorola Software Update has to be downloaded and installed from Motorola's support site:

After the installation and connecting the Milestone to the PC, the software will install new and/or missing/required drivers:

The Motorola Software Update is comparing the device firmware with the latest available firmware on Motorola's update server. If a newer software is found, the application will download it and automatically update the Milestone firmware:

That's it! Most notable changes after the firmware update to Android 2.0.1 are the changed unlock screen, the slightly updated Power Control widget and an updated Media Gallery (in landscape only).

Further, under the hood improvements, are mostly identical to the Droid 2.0.1 update which includes an improved Android OS stability, an improved battery life, a bug fix an enhanced camera auto focus functionality with reduced time between shots, improved audio quality for incoming calls and a couple of Bluetooth functionality improvements.
Furthermore, after closing a GPS application, the GPS icon will now automatically be removed from the notification panel as well as users can now receive SMS and MMS messages after an EMS message is received.

The PC update is now available for Motorola Milestone users in Germany, France and Italy. The update isn't offered in the UK yet.

UPDATE: The OTA update is now also distributed to German Vodafone and open market Milestones. Nevertheless, the PC update is still available and another option to update the Milestone firmware manually.

Cheers ~ Arne
