Motorola recently released a ROM update for the MPx220 Smartphone which is - however - designed to work with the Cingular sales pack only.

According to the Motorola site, where you can get the update, this update is for devices which has a different version than the but unlike HTC updates (like for the Xda Pocket PCs or the i-mate Smartphones) the tool offers a "personal data backup" functionality:

This tool will update the Operating System on your device.
This update is only for Cingular devices purchased in North America.

During the update you will have the ability to backup and restore the following items

  • Time & Date
  • SMS Inbox
  • Ringtone & sound settings
  • Java Midlet installation packages
  • Pocket Internet Explorer Favorites
  • Home Screen and Images including current homescreen
  • Files in storageapplication datahome
  • Files in storagehomemy documents
  • Calendar & Contacts (Not recommended if you use ActiveSync synchronisation as duplication of these items may occur)

This ROM update is a paradigm change for Motorola who denied so far to offer ROM updates through the Internet and good news for all MPx220 owners, right now from Cingular. According to Smartphone Thoughts visitors, the updates fixes the sound problems and improves the camera quality but doesn't adds Windows Media Player 10 Mobile (yet?).

Cheers ~ Arne
