Following last year's Android 2.1 upgrade, Sony Ericsson announced today that it has started started with the roll-out of the next update if its 2010 family of Xperia products, namely the X10, X10 mini, X10 mini pro and X8. While it's neither an Android 2.2 nor an Android 2.3 upgrade but just an update, it brings optimizations and bug fixes along with pinch to zoom for mobile Internet and Google Maps, which will be - unfortunately - only available for the for Xperia X10. Furthermore the update will include the addition of some bi-directional languages (Arabic, Farsi, Thai and Hebrew) for all above mentioned Xperia products.
Besides the new features above some other improvements, some of these can be market and operator dependant though, includes:
- Moxier updated version (2.7.13) that includes a great overview widget for E-Mail, calendar and tasks
- Moxier E-Mail shown in Timescape.
- Possibilities of trimming videos in the phone.
- Videos are transcoded to fit into MMS-messages even if they were recorded in high quality.
- Minor changes to Mediascape with access to "Now Playing" in the top right corner.
For the Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro as well as the Xperia X8, sony Ericsson said it has also enabled the ANT+ support in the chipset. ANT+ is a standard for short-range communication with things like heart rate monitors, a pedometer, or both, when you are out running.
More info about ANT+ can be found at www.thisisant.com or in previous Sony Ericsson blog post made at CES).
According to Sony Ericsson, the roll-out should start from now for the Xperia X10 and within a week or so for the Xperia X10 mini, X10 mini pro and Xperia X8 but just as last time it will be a gradual roll-out where each and every kit needs different approvals before it can be released.
This update can be done either using PC-companion or (for most markets) also over the air directly from the phone.
Cheers ~ Arne
