As HTC announced on Facebook yesterday evening, the wait is - almost - over and HTC Desire customers will finally get its long awaited and previously canceled Android 2.3/Gingerbread upgrade: "Hi everyone. We have more news about our build of Gingerbread for Desire. Our testing has gone well so we will begin rolling out the update by the end of July! Thank you again for your support!". Initially HTC said it had (memory) problems to bring Android 2.3 and HTC Sense to the Desire but decided later to simply remove some of the Sense goodies to make room for Gingerbread. According to HTC, the HTC Desire Gingerbread update is in internal tests since late June and therefore a late July release sounds reasonable.
Nevertheless, no word yet if the Android 2.3/Gingerbread upgrade will be released for HTC stock-devices only or if carrier customers will also participate from the release. It's also still unknown if HTC will release an Android 2.3.3 or Android 2.3.4 update.
Cheers ~ Arne
