UTILITY: Automatic Keylock for Windows Mobile Smartphones

Not sure how old this thing is (anyone knows? At least I haven't heard about it before) but since it is also available for Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphones now, at least this version can't be too old. ;-)
One thing which really annoys me with the Windows Mobile Smartphones is the missing auto-key lock, mostly every bred and butter mobile phones has. Sure you can go the workaround through the device lock but this is a workaround, even not a good one.
Anyway, with maniac's Automatic key lock (which was updated yesterday) you get a pretty convenient tool which does pretty much all you need and even more:

  • You can select the key lock timeout, configured separately for applications and Home screen
  • You can select to enable automatic key lock when on Home screen only
  • You can exclude applications from the automatic key lock and it features two different modes:
    • Simple mode: Pocket Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, BetaPlayer and HTC camera application are excludable
    • Advanced mode: You can define your own list of applications by listing the executables
  • You can select to disable automatic key lock if in headset or car profile or if charging
  • The phone can automatically be unlocked when switching to headset or car profile or when charging begins (but only if it was automatically locked before)
  • The backlight can be turned always on if in car profile or when charging
  • A screen saver can be automatically be activated together with the key lock and can shows the time and date, missed calls, unread messages, etc. Even the font sizes and layout of the screen saver are configurable

Now that's what I call handy and I like the Sony T68 styled screensaver watch with interesting information such as time, date, unread messages and missed calls plus reception, battery status and profile.

Automatic Keylock is freeware and can be downloaded from the developer's project page. It's available for Windows Mobile 2003 and 5.0 Smartphones. Also it features several localizations including German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish and many more!

Cheers ~ Arne

Arne, you are not alone! Also I have never heard about it and I'm using Smartphones since the first Canary!
Looks good; have you tested it (I think so) and is it that good as it looks?

Yo, I have it running right now on my i-mate SP5 and it looks good, at least it does everything it promises. Now I have to watch the battery, if and if how much it drains it. But so far I like it. No more unintentional calls to my contacts. big_smile

Hi there,

in fact the program is a half year old wink

Regarding battery life: If you do not have the screen turned on all the time, which makes sense for the screen saver, the battery life is not noticably affected.
With the screen turned on, it is naturally shorter, especially on WM5 devices which do not completely shut down the backlight. For this case, the volume buttons enable the backligt for a short time in the screen saver.

Hi maniac! Thanks for coming over here. So half a year already? Damn, I seriously missed! wink
Regarding the screen saver I haven't noticed a serious battery drain because on my i-mate SP5's the back-light turns off (the back-light works in three phases: full, reduced off) so this is perfect.

One suggestion for the improvement: would be nice if the key-lock disables automatically if you have received a call. Yesterday, when I received one I wasn't able to change the volume during the call because the key-lock was still activated. Maybe this is something you want to improve in the next version.

Anyway - well done so far!

This will be fixed in the upcoming version. wink It only applies to WM5 phones.

Hi,
I installed this application on a Qteck 9100 (MDA Vario) on WM5 and it works great except the keylock functionality.
That means, that the hardware keys are not looked after the application launched.
Do I get something wrong?

In addition I want to develop a small application, which enables me to just lock all keys (except one) and the display. This application should be assigned to a defined hardware key.
Can you give me some code examples for the same, as I did not find any information about it.
I only know the the SHUTIL.DLL is used by WM5. But no idea, which functionality this DLL delivers.

Thanks in advance.
Frank

You installed it where? On a Pocket PC Phone Edition? But you have read that it is designed for Smartphones, not for Pocket PCs, right?

System requirements:
Windows Mobile 2003/2003SE/5.0 based smartphone

No wonder it's not locking the keys of your Qtek 9100 neither it should lock the touchscreen since Smartphones don't have a touchscreen.

Hi was just reading your posts. Where can I go to download key lock for my phone? Also what screensavers are out for WM 5.0? I have been looking but all of them are for 2003 version. Very frustrating.

My tool only has one screen saver with time, date, missed calls & messages and some phone status icons. About other screen savers: I don't know wink

Colin, you've missed one important thing: Automatic key lock is for Windows Mobile Smartphones not for Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone like the Xda mini S is.

This looks like a great utility, I need one for my BlackBerry -- but cannot find the software!  Can anyone kindly point me to the RIM version of this great tool?  THANKS
