UTILITY: Flash Format 2.6 for Pocket PC and Handheld PC released

CNetX today released version 2. 60 of its Flash Format, the popular storage card management utility for Pocket PC and Handheld PC devices.

The latest version includes support for the new Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PCs as well as improved storage integrity verification and repair of allocation errors. In addition it fixes AutoRun for Pocket PC 2003 devices

As you you may know, Flash Format is currently the only program allowing users to set AutoRun on their storage cards, so that specific contents (such as games or MP3 play list) can be automatically activated upon insertion of a specific storage card.

But you may not know that AutoRun support and implementation may vary significantly on different brand/models of Pocket PCs and some of the latest Pocket PC 2003 devices are indeed quite curious in this respect.

For example, apparently the latest HP iPAQ 2200 Pocket PC doesn't trigger AutoRun at all. But if AutoRun is activated on a Compact Flash card and a soft-reset is performed while that CF card is inserted, the system will enable AutoRun on the device and it will effectively trigger AutoRun for any SD or CF card subsequently inserted as most of the other devices normally do!

Flash Format can be purchased online for US$ 11.95 from PocketGear. Version 2.60 is available as a free upgrade to all registered users of version 2.xx. A full featured demo version of Flash Format is also available.

Cheers ~ Arne
