Google goes even more serious with its Google Voice functionality for Android smartphones by releasing an update to its Android app today, which gives users immediate access to the Google Voice Inbox and settings via two new homescreen widgets. The Google Voice Inbox widget brings users the most recent voicemails and text messages to the device home screen. With the widget, users can now quickly flip through messages in the Inbox, and if a message preview is selected, it will open in the Google Voice app. The widgets can be used together or individually and are part of the new Google Voice app, available for download from Android Market today.

Additionally, the Google Voice widget displays the credit balance of a users Google Voice account. A Google Voice account, which is available free of charge, is required to use the new widgets. However, at the moment Google Voice is available in the US only.

Cheers ~ Arne
