The idea of GPRS/UMTS wireless monitors for smartphones isn't anything new anymore but RadioOpt's Traffic Monitor for Android is an interesting one. Unfortunately, there's still a need for this kind of monitors, either because the tariff has a maximum data cap with speed throttling or because international data roaming is still insanely expensive. Traffic Monitor is not just tracking the data upload and download consumed by the phone's WWAN of WiFi connection, it also comes with an integrated speed test and task manager. Furthermore, and that's interesting, it's also monitoring the traffic per application as well as it can track tethering traffic if the device is used as a mobile hotspot.
Traffic Monitor provides statistics for current and last day as well as the current and last month with a configurable start day of the monthly measurement period.
The inbuilt speedometer is able to measure the speed and delay of wireless connections as well as providing a geo-located history of previous speed tests. Last but not least it features a task manager to check currently running apps incl. memory usage which also allows to kill memory and/or traffic hungry apps. Furthermore, Traffic Monitor is able to show battery (level, voltage, temperature) and mobile network and cell information.
Traffic Monitor, which now supports Android 2.3, was just updated to version 2.2 and the ad-free utility is now available free of charge from the Android Market.
