VIDEOVIEW: Samsung Galaxy S Multimedia Capabilities

Following the previous videoviews of the brand new Samsung Galaxy S, today's videoview is about the Galaxy S' multimedia capabilities. Featuring either 8 or 16 GB inbuilt flash memory, a bright and crisp 4" Super AMOLED display, a super fast Samsung Hummingbird CPU at 1 GHz and a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack, the Galaxy S is well prepared to serve the user's multimedia needs for phot, video and music playback. Furthermore, the Galaxy S features a high-quality 5 megapixel camera which allows to snap photos up to 2560 x 1920 pixel as well as recording HD videos up to 30 fps at 720p. Unfortunately Samsung hasn't added a supporting flash LED which reduces the usability in low-light environments.

Nevertheless, in terms of the software, Samsung made everything right since it replaced the Android vanilla camera interface as well as the media gallery and the music and video player with its own software which is really great in terms of the look and feel and usability.

Cheers ~ Arne

Cheers for the brief over-view of the Galaxy S's media capabilities... looks pretty good.

I had a brief go on one in a store yesterday, but had no internet access, so couldn't try out that much...

So... I'm still wondering a couple of things. One is; is there any sort of a video editor available? I saw the icon for it in a preview, and a screenshot of it running once, but I don't know if it's ever come to market... Is it in the market? Or in the Samsung Apps? That would be uber cool.

Secondly, and this is a useability thing, I wondered how you get on with not having any direction keys (and no apple-esqu magnifying glass)? The reason I ask is that I have the G1, and I not infrequently use the track ball to get the cursor exactly where I want it. Similarly with selecting text - how does the galaxy S fare in these?

Thanks again for the info!

No, the Galaxy S doesn't come with a video editor and I'm not exactly sure if there's one in the market since I edit all my videos after on the PC anyway. But the Galaxy S doesn't have one preinstalled.

I agree, the lack of any navigation keys (D-pad, trackball, whatever) is always a downside but you can get used to it! I had many Android phones without one (Acer Liquid, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and now the Samsung Galaxy S) and as long as the screen is that big, it's not a real problem at all. Might be more difficult with smaller-screen devices like the HTC Legend or Wildfire.

Arne, you've covered all the questions I had about the device - thanks for taking the time to develop these videos.
