In this video view I will take a closer look on the Samsung SGH-i780's unique 320 x 320 touch screen. While the i780 looks like an i600/BlackJack, it features a touchscreen because it's based on Windows Mobile 6 Professional. And unlike most of today's Windows Mobile touchscreens, the i780 features a kind of Bio Touch touchscreen as also used by HTC for its TouchFLO enabled line of Windows Mobile 6 smartphones.
This Bio Touch display is a frame-less touch-sensitive screen which features a solid Plexiglas panel on top of the LCD display which has a thin touch-sensitive film on top.

This makes the display stable and allows to use the thumb in addition to the stylus:

While most of the inbuilt applications take benefit of the increased screen resolution (a 320 x 320 pixel screen has 80 pixels more than a Windows Mobile-typical 320 x 340 QVGA screen), some 3rd party applications neither benefit from the (yet uncommon but by Windows Mobile supported) screen resolution nor output properly but leaves a black border on the right/bottom.
This is something which definitely needs to be resolved by affected developers of such applications. While the i780 is the first Windows Mobile smartphone with the (yet) unusual screen resolution, I'm sure it's not the last.

Cheers ~ Arne

cool video. do you know if the touchscreen capability works through any kind of protector?

Posted by Arne Hess on 20.11.07 - 23:38:33

I hadn't had the chance to test screen protectors but I'm sure it will work with screen protectors too. At least the the HTC Touchs do and they have a similar screen.

Why does the i780 display less in the browser than the HTC? Both have 320 pixel!? It should display as mouch as the HTC in landscape and portrait mode combined!

No confirmed release dates given yet and it's not available NOW.
A release is planned for early 2008.
