One year ago, Pebble showed it's Pebble smartwatch to the public for the very first time in Las Vegas at the 2013 CES. And today, Pebble opened the second chapter and is announcing during today's press event the introduction to the "Pebble Steel", the company's new and premium smartwatch. Following the iconic, colorful and sporty 1st smartwatch design, the Pebble Steel takes everything Pebblers know and love to a more stylish and enhanced level. Like the original Pebble, the Pebble Steel comes with an ePaper display, 5 to 7 days battery life and waterproof design; but sports a smaller and thinner package. Pebble says that it's latest smartwatch is made of forged and CNC-machined stainless steel.
The display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass and the lens includes an antifingerprint coating. Pebble has also upgraded the hardware with an RGB LED in the lower left corner that indicates the charging status. Both two Pebble models are running the same Pebble OS which allows to install third party apps from Pebble's recently announced and soon to be launched Pebble appstore.
The Pebble Steel will come in two configurations: "Brushed Stainless" and "Black Matte" and both models come with two bands: a matching metal band and a black leather strap. The Black Matte version uses a process called "Physical Vapor Deposition" to provide an ultradurable finish.
Starting today, interested people will be able to order the Pebble Steel exclusively from getpebble.com for US$ 249, which includes free courier shipping worldwide for early orders - except Germany, as Pebble confirmed the::unwired. Germans are still out of luck due to problems with German customs. For the rest, shipping is said to start on January 28.
Cheers ~ Arne
