Yesterday Carlo wrote about the new iPAQ h5450 and h1910 drivers for the Pocketop keyboard and today my review sample arrived - thanks to Nick from HandheldDomain. I will give it an extended test next week when I'm in Paris for the Microsoft MDC and the Möbius conference which is a pretty good chance to test the keyboard in a realistic environment but as alsways, find here my photo preview of it:

With a relative size smaller then a Pocket PC, the Pocketop Keyboard might be the smallest keyboard that offers the user the traditional touch, feel and functionality of a laptop keyboard. The wireless feature gives the Pocketop Keyboard the added advantage of universal compatibility with most Palm OS and Pocket PC PDAs.

Package Contents:

  • Pocketop Keyboard

  • Universal PDA Stand

  • 1 Custom Hinge to attach Stand to the keyboard

  • 1 AAA Battery

  • CD with Software Driver and Manual

  • Quick Installation Guide

  • Several Hinges for PALM PDAs

  • 1 Custom Stylus

Unlike the Targus foldable keyboard, the Pocketop required a battery since it works standalone via IrDA. The button size varies, while the middle row looks like a standard keys, the upper and lower keys are smaller and not flat as keys used to looks like. Also there is no row for the numeric keys but added to the upper buttons row. This is a little bit irritating, less because you can not add a count by pressing a single key but I mostly miss the additional characters also located on the numeric keys. To add this additional characters you need to press a second function key.

Compared to a Targus foldable keyboard the Pocketop is really small and a lightweight.

On the left you can see how it could work with a Pocket PC by using the Universal PDA Stand, the right picture is something I hope to see soon... ;-) Smartphones are currently not supported by the Pocketop!

As I said before, I will give the Pocketop a detailed look next week where I will be able to test it under real circumstances; find my complete review the week after here!

Cheers ~ Arne
